How do you pick one?

I have a question. It is not now relevant to me- but I was wondering about it. How do you date long enough and not end up with a guy too soon? When I dated in the past- I think I sort of get caught up in a situation and dont necessarily explore all of my options.
My question is, how do you properly do this? How do you know when to stop dating? How do you know when to start dating again and can you do this without hurting anyones feelings?

I think you just date a lot at one time and when you find one you can't do without- you stop dating the others.

Cliche and corny, but you just know...

And then years later you find yourself here...trying to find a way out...again!

The "you just know" thing baffles me. How? Like do you fall down in amazement? Do you lose 15 pounds? Do you get smarter? prettier? How do you know?

Well, now that I think about it, since I am not with 'the one' maybe I'm wrong about the 'you just know' thing...

Maybe when it does happen you see skyrockets...like Peter Brady did with Millicent.

I think your opinion is valid, Runaway Train. I believe that people come into our lives for a reason and that there's no promise of how long they will be in our lives. If you 'just knew' when you met a person, trust that it was who you were supposed to fall in love with at that time. You've probably grown and learned so much about yourself because of that person. To me, that's validation enough, even if the learning and growing has made you now 'just know' that you shouldn't be with the person anymore.

Somewhat convoluted, but I think I make my point.

I'm still not sold on the you will know thing. I have thought I have known and was wrong in the past...so does this mean I was actually wrong, or maybe it was right, but right for a short time? Who knows I guess. Maybe its a big joke on all of us. Maybe we aren't supposed to be with the same person for life...or maybe there is just one person for each of us that is perfect and we spend lifetimes looking. Maybe we come back time and time again and keep looking until we find the perfect person- our solumate - and at this time maybe we go someplace great with that person and get to stop spending eternity looking. That's a thought

Maybe you do know.
Maybe the problem is:
1-we can't tell when we know.
2- we know- but we ignore the details.
3- we just don't want to be alone.
4- we think "this" is better than nothing.
5- we are happy to have "won"- even if we don't want the actual prize.
6- or the above mentioned lifetime joke.
